Fragment G of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collides with Jupiter. This picture
was taken by the South Pole Infrared Explorer (SPIREX) at UTC 18 July 1994
at 7:41. This brilliant explosion remnant is vastly more powerful than
any other impact we have seen at 2.36 microns so far. The planet is
faint because the exposures were short to avoid saturating the detectors.
These observations were performed by University of Chicago and Center for
Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA) Astrophysicists Mark Hereld,
Hien Nguyen (at South Pole), Bernard J. Rauscher, and Scott A. Severson.
